[rift] a very important letter

General Hadley,
You and I both know the way this world works with all its tricks and—for lack of a better word—fuckery, so this letter should not come as much of a surprise. I know it will, of course, so I'll spare you a few moments to let the shock sink in.
Better? Okay.
The only way this can work (if you want to call it "working") is if you stay where you are (as well you damn should) and I stay where I am. We can never cross paths. Don't let anyone know I even exist, do you understand? Not Hannah, not Maddock, not Dunn; no one can know. I refuse to be a part of one of those stories in which someone's future self shows up to warn their current self about whatever the hell—I am not here to do anything for you. I am here by mistake, and I want nothing to do with whatever it is you have going on in this world.
I will not tell you what you should and should not do. You're not allowed to contact me and ask me about anything; I have no pertinent information to share with you. Our lives are very different, and I am very much in the wrong time period. All attempts at contact will be ignored, and if I ever see your face here, I will punch it. And how are you going to explain that black eye?
I would love nothing more than to hop on a plane to Scotland right now to see Hannah and everyone else, but she is not my sister. She's yours. Keep her. And I mean that in every way—that will be the only piece of advice you get out of me. I can't tell you what's in store for you in the future, but she will always be the most important thing. I know I don't have to tell you that.
Don't leave her again.
And don't worry about things here in Chicago. I've met Dylan and Millie and the others (but not your boyfriend, whatever that was about) and explained what happened. They seem comfortable enough with it, so I am as well. Rest assured that I am not trying to fit into whatever role you had here, including your role in the Order. Consider this a formal renouncement of all my ties to the Order and its members, as this is your world and all of that is yours.
Also, before I close this and leave you to your own life: Don't even think about writing something into your will about this. If you die, I do not want to get a phone call saying I need to get on a plane and take your place. I will do no such thing under any circumstances, ever.
All that said, I really do hope you have a long and happy life ahead of you. That's all I could ever want for myself.
Most sincerely,
Fletcher G. Hadley
